Date commissioned 2026

Overview

The Tarong Battery is a 300 MW battery energy storage system with 600 MWh of storage capacity, making it one of the largest battery projects in Queensland.

Battery storage plays an important role in modern electricity systems by helping balance supply and demand. The Tarong Battery can charge when electricity generation is high and discharge when demand rises or generation falls, helping support system reliability and grid stability. Its fast-response capability allows it to respond to changes in network conditions within fractions of a second.

Located onsite at the Tarong power stations, the battery provides essential firming capacity for renewable energy projects planned across Southern Queensland and supports the integration of renewable generation into the broader electricity system.

The project was delivered in two stages and represents a total investment of $514 million in future energy infrastructure. As Stanwell's first battery energy storage system, it marks an important step in developing a more diverse and flexible energy portfolio for Queensland.
