The main by-product from burning coal at our sites is coal combustion products (CCPs), including fly ash, bottom ash and cenospheres. These materials are either stored on site or reused by other industries, such as in the production of concrete and building products, helping reduce reliance on natural quarry materials.

Reusing CCPs conserves natural resources, reduces waste and supports circular economy outcomes by keeping valuable resources in productive use.

Rehabilitation is a key part of responsible mining, helping ensure a positive legacy long after mining activities are complete.

At Meandu Mine, 25 kilometres south-east of Kingaroy in the South Burnett, we work closely with regulators to restore mined land to native ecosystems, using species suited to the region’s climate and conditions.

Progressive rehabilitation is a key part of Meandu Mine's operations. We continue to rehabilitate disturbed areas throughout the life of the mine, helping restore native ecosystems, support biodiversity and prepare land for productive future use.

In late 2022, a long-term study began at Stanwell Power Station to explore how silvopastoral systems – combining trees and livestock grazing – can support carbon neutrality in sub-tropical and tropical farming.

Stanwell has provided land within our 100-hectare hardwood tree plantation for the project team to use.

Led by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and co-funded by Meat and Livestock Australia, the five-year study is generating data to inform practical tools for local cattle farmers. These tools will guide decisions on tree species, planting configurations and land use to deliver carbon and productivity benefits.

Stanwell partnered with the Fitzroy Basin Association to rehabilitate sections of Stony Creek, a natural waterway that runs through the Stanwell Power Station site.

The project involved stabilising eroded creek banks, supporting revegetation and reducing sediment runoff into downstream waterways.

Supported by the Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the works contribute to improved water quality outcomes and help protect the Great Barrier Reef catchment.

The project is an example of how Stanwell works with environmental and community partners to support long-term environmental stewardship.

Stanwell has partnered with Tunuba, an Indigenous business, to manage around 1,200 hectares of conservation land at Stanwell Power Station, including the Stanwell Nature Refuge.

Tunuba (named after the Darumbal word for the Fitzroy River) delivers land management services that support local employment, cultural practice and economic development in Central Queensland.

Tunuba’s rangers are working alongside ecologists to apply strategic and cultural land management techniques that enhance and protect the natural values of the site.
